Phoenix Commercial Vehicle Driver Falls Asleep - Crashes into Several Cars - Fire Erupts - Kills One, Injures Several.

The Arizona Highway Patrol Indicates That Impairment Was Likely a Factor.

Phoenix, Az

A semi-truck with a trailer full of pavers struck several cars on Wednesday morning November 19, 2014, on Interstate 17 (I-17). The big rig crashed into a Mercedes SUV which caught fire with the driver trapped inside. An Arizona Highway Patrol (AZHP) officer pulled the victim from the vehicle and he was rushed to the hospital where he died.

While the cause of the accident is still under investigation by the AZHP, it is reported that the semi-truck driver drifted across several lanes of traffic before crashing into four other cars and trucks. Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) officers said that the driver did not apply the brakes before, during or after the crash.

AZDPS officers administered a field sobriety test to the trucker, 54-year-old Brian Knoll. He was led away in handcuffs after admitting to falling asleep before the crash. The truck driver faces second degree murder and aggravated assault charges.

According Maricopa County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) Knoll was booked on the following charges: five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, five counts of endangerment, and two counts of aggravated assault causing temporary disfigurement.

The Semi-Truck driver did indicate to AZDPS officers that a regulation required pre-trip inspection had been performed and that no issues were found with the tractor-trailer rig.

The truck is owned by Pavestone, a subsidiary of Quikrete Corporation, which is based in Atlanta Georgia. In accident also cause a spill of Knollā€™s load of paver stones all over the southbound lanes of the I-17 freeway.
