Florida Truck Load Shifts and Kills Semi Truck Driver.

Shifting Steel Beams Crush Driver

SAINT CLOUD, Florida. A truck driver was crushed by his shifting cargo in St. Cloud, FL. The driver's company has been cited multiple times for improperly securing cargo.

Glen Estien, 32, was crushed when the metal beams he was hauling on his flat bed trailer crashed through the cab of his truck on Wednesday September 10, 2014.

Federal officials have stated Sunshine Freight Carriers was on a prioritized list for increased inspections because of its past safety record.

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is focusing on whether the metal beams were properly secured to the bed of the trailer.

“In any normal situation, those beams should not come loose simply by applying the brakes," said FHP spokeswoman Kim Montes. “This truck struck no other vehicle. There was no other impact, so they should stay in place.”

The beams crashed through the cab when Estien slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting a fire truck as it pulled out of its station.

Accident witnesses said Estien was crushed to death.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Sunshine Freight Carriers has two drivers and a string of violations.

Since 2012, the company was cited 17 times for maintenance violations, including one for failure to prevent cargo from shifting, one for damaged cargo restraints or tie-downs and one for failing to meet minimum tie down requirements.

The company also has been accused of violating Hours of Service ( HOS ) rules.
